American Flyers ensures students build the confidence, skill sets, and knowledge required to be a qualified and safe pilot.

For those seeking to earn a commercial pilot certificate but who require a flexible schedule, 1-on-1 training options are available. These programs are designed for pilots who want to fly for compensation or hire, satisfy insurance requirements for high-performance aircraft, or elevate the safety and precision of their personal flying.

Our 1-on-1 Commercial Programs provide the structure of a professional flight school with the personalized attention of a dedicated instructor. Our instructors are full-time employees, not independent contractors. They are available whenever your schedule permits, ensuring consistency in your training and aircraft availability.

To accommodate different entry points, experience levels, and professional goals, American Flyers offers two programs to earn your commercial certificate.

The Commercial Certificate Program

Designed for Students Building Their Qualifications from the Ground Up

This program is structured to establish a progressive foundation of airmanship, technical precision, and safety.

During this program, training focus shifts from basic proficiency to professional precision. The Commercial Pilot Certificate marks the legal threshold authorizing a pilot to fly for compensation or hire. Under FAA regulations (14 CFR Part 61), earning this commercial certificate requires a minimum of 250 total flight hours, including training in a complex or technically advanced aircraft.

This commercial pilot program focuses on advanced maneuvers such as chandelles and lazy eights and mastering complex aircraft systems and emergency procedures to meet the high standards of safety and airmanship required for commercial operations. At American Flyers, we often integrate Instrument and Commercial training into a combined program. This approach allows you to build the required 155 hours to earn both your instrument rating and commercial certificate efficiently, while mastering the high-level skills demanded of professional pilots.

The Commercial Finish-Up Program

Have you started your Commercial but not finished? – This finish up program will get you on your way.

The curriculum adapts to your current qualifications, accommodating those who hold a Private Pilot Certificate, pilots who have completed both their Private and Instrument ratings, or individuals who earned partial commercial hours elsewhere before encountering delays due to weather, scheduling, or life circumstances.

Utilizing your foundational certificates or existing hours as an asset, the Finish Up Program evaluates and isolates your remaining requirements to get you across the finish line efficiently.

  • Logbook Analysis: Your logged hours are an asset and we ensure they count toward your certificate. The process begins with a comprehensive logbook evaluation and a flight assessment with an experienced instructor. This allows us to identify your remaining FAA aeronautical experience requirements and evaluate your proficiency with commercial maneuvers.
  • Targeted Training: From there, we build a customized 1-on-1 syllabus designed to fill any training gaps, refine your skills to commercial standards, and thoroughly prepare you for the FAA practical test. This tailored approach ensures you complete your certificate efficiently without paying for unnecessary training hours.

Additional Recommended Courses

To become a more skilled and safer commercial pilot, consider these additional training opportunities after completing your commercial certificate.

Multi-Engine Rating

The Multi-Engine Rating is an endorsement that transitions a commercial pilot to twin-engine aircraft. Governed by FAA regulations as a train to proficiency rating, the Multi-Engine rating has no minimum flight hour requirements. Training covers multi-engine aerodynamics, focusing heavily on emergency procedures, such as mastering the critical engine concept and safe handling during engine-out scenarios. We recommend a program that includes approximately 12 hours of dual flight instruction and 10 hours of ground instruction, utilizing advanced simulators to build procedural discipline and confidence efficiently.

The 30-Day CFI-A & CFI-I Academy

Our 30-Day CFI Academy is built on the principle that those who understand a concept can teach it, moving beyond basic memorization to a professional mastery of aviation. The program is designed to earn you both your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI-A) and Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFI-I) ratings in a single month. Operating as a flight instructor provides a strong foundation for future aviation opportunities and serves as an effective way to accumulate flight hours.

  • During the CFI-A (Airplane) portion of the course, focus is placed on mastering the Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) and performing Private and Commercial maneuvers. You learn to narrate actions, explaining the rationale behind flight maneuvers while maintaining commercial precision. American Flyers emphasizes safety culture and professionalism, teaching you how to manage students, identify common errors, and complete logbook endorsements.
  • The CFI-I (Instrument) phase shifts you from an instrument-rated pilot to an instructor capable of teaching without outside references. You will master teaching scanning patterns, instrument interpretation, and complex IFR procedures, including precision approaches, holding patterns, and advanced navigation. American Flyers leverages advanced simulators and actual IFR conditions to build real-world proficiency, ensuring you can teach future students how to manage navigation and communicate with ATC.

If the 30-day CFI Academy does not fit your schedule, customized CFI 1-on-1 programs are available to meet your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

A Commercial Pilot Certificate is a qualification that allows a pilot to act as pilot-in-command of an aircraft for compensation or hire. While a Private Pilot license is for personal and recreational use, the Commercial Certificate is the essential legal requirement for anyone looking to turn flying into a professional career, whether as a flight instructor, corporate pilot, or airline captain.

The program is built on a “building block” concept, ensuring every new skill is built upon a solid prerequisite. For those training under FAR Part 141, American Flyers often uses a combined Instrument/Commercial curriculum. This integrated approach provides maximum flexibility, allowing students to build required solo time while simultaneously mastering instrument maneuvers, which keeps the training schedule efficient regardless of weather conditions.

To be eligible for the Commercial checkride, applicants must hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate. Under FAR Part 61, a pilot generally needs a minimum of 250 flight hours, whereas the American Flyers FAR Part 141 approved curriculum can allow students to qualify in as few as 190 total flight hours. Additionally, candidates must pass an FAA knowledge (written) test and a practical flight exam (checkride).

Yes. American Flyers allows students to use their own personal or club aircraft for training, provided the insurance requirements are met. Using a familiar aircraft can often increase a student’s comfort level and proficiency, though the school also maintains a fleet of state-of-the-art Cessna 172s and Piper Pilot 100i aircraft for those who prefer to use school equipment.

American Flyers is unique in offering a Custom Finish-Up Program for pilots who have already started their training elsewhere but haven’t completed it. Instead of forcing students into a rigid, pre-packaged “course,” American Flyers evaluates a pilot’s existing flight experience and skill level to create a custom-tailored syllabus that focuses only on the remaining requirements needed to pass the checkride.
