The FAA’s new Modernization of Special Airworthiness Requirements (MOSAIC) rule is a landmark change, significantly expanding the privileges for Sport Pilots to include operations in larger, more capable aircraft and enabling flight into controlled airspace. At American Flyers, we've designed a specialized Sport Pilot - Airspace Training Course to get you compliant and confident. Safety is our primary concern. This essential training ensures you can safely, legally, and proficiently take advantage of your new flight capabilities, navigating Class B, C, and D airspace with professionalism and precision, and operating within the full scope of the MOSAIC provisions. Get ready to unlock the full potential of your Sport Pilot certificate.
Course Overview
Our comprehensive Sport Pilot – Airspace Training Course is structured to teach safety and proficiency in compliance with the new MOSAIC rules. The curriculum is built around the FAA’s performance standards, focusing on advanced ATC communication protocols, controlled airport operations, and seamless, safe airspace transitions. We instill the decision-making skills required for safety and competence in multiple airspace environments.
Requirements
Sport pilot certificate
This endorsement is required to fly through controlled airspace.
To legally and safely exercise the new ability to operate in controlled airspace—specifically Class B, C, and D — a pilot must first develop a firm foundation in the National Airspace System and ATC communication procedures for controlled airport operations. These necessary aviation fundamentals are covered in ground training sessions.
SESSION 1
National airspace overview
VFR weather minimums and visibility requirements
Requirements for each airspace
VFR Sectional chart and symbology
Applicable FARs
SESSION 2
ATC communication procedures
Phonetic alphabet
Radio phraseology
Establish and maintain two-way radio communication
Communication failure procedures
Airport operations
Runway incursion avoidance
Chart supplement
Taxiway/runway markings and signs
Controlled tower operations
Traffic pattern
SESSION 3
Navigation Systems
Transponder and ADS-B requirements
ATC radar services, including VFR flight following
Scenario-Based training
VFR transition through B, C, D airspace
Lost comms procedures
Task management
Situational awareness
FLIGHT TRAINING
Approximately 9 Hours / 3 Flights
The Flight Training portion of the Sport Pilot – Airspace Training Course ensures you possess the necessary aeronautical experience and skill to consistently and proficiently manage all controlled airspace operations required for the endorsement. This portion of the course ensures you meet the FAA’s standard for safe integration into complex operational environments.

Transition to Class C and B Airspace
Establish two-way radio communication with approach
Comply with ATC Instructions
Traffic pattern
Depart and re-enter Class C under ATC control
Obtain clearance and enter Class B
Comply with ATC instructions (altitudes, headings, sequencing) o Transition from approach to tower
FLIGHT 3
Final evaluation
Establish two-way radio communication with approach
