Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

While other American Flyers locations offer a diversified mix of individual, part-time, and flexible training, the Addison South campus is specifically dedicated to the full-time, group-format Airline Academy. The entire infrastructure, aircraft scheduling, and specialized team at Addison South are focused on taking career-minded students from zero flight time through their commercial and instructor certifications in an immersive, fast-track academy environment. This focus ensures that students are explicitly trained to develop the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and crew-coordination skills required by commercial airlines.

Because the Addison South location is designed around full-time group training that draws in students from all over, their on-site team is uniquely structured to handle out-of-town logistics. According to American Flyers, the staff at Addison South is specially trained to assist students with choosing regional housing, welcoming new students directly at the airport upon their arrival, and helping them transition smoothly into their full-time training environment.

Operating two facilities on the same field is a unique configuration that occurred when American Flyers transitioned its specialized career academy from Meacham Field in Fort Worth to the Addison Airport. Rather than blending two different instructional approaches into one building, the school maintains both facilities to support two entirely distinct training environments:

  • Addison North: Represents a 30-year operational history focused on a flexible, self-paced environment. Instructors here train on the student’s schedule, providing individual or career-oriented programs for full-time or part-time students, including those making a career change or flying for personal accomplishment.
  • Addison South: Serves as American Flyers’ unique sixth national training center, which is explicitly equipped for career training in a full-time, structured group-academy format.

In alignment with their back to basics training philosophy, the Addison South facility utilizes FAA approved Advanced Aviation Training Devices built by Frasca International. American Flyers has partnered with this manufacturer since funding and purchasing the very first production Frasca simulator decades ago. Specifically, the campus features the Frasca Reconfigurable Training Device.

The distinct training advantage of the Frasca RTD is its ability to easily reconfigure to different aircraft panel layouts. Instructors can change the presentation layout to match two completely different styles of aviation technology:

  • Traditional Six-Pack Round Dials: Used during primary and early instrument training to build a strong visual scan and ensure basic pilot skills remain sharp without relying too heavily on automation.
  • Modern Glass Cockpits: Reconfigures to display advanced electronic systems using Garmin software. This allows career academy students to manage moving maps, primary flight displays, and multi-function displays like those found in modern commercial aircraft.

Because the Addison South campus operates exclusively as a full-time career academy, its curriculum extends beyond flight hours to focus heavily on professional development. American Flyers structures the campus environment to prepare students for the recruitment standards of corporate flight departments and commercial airlines. This includes focusing on standard operating procedures, crew resource management concepts, and interview preparation resources designed to help graduates confidently navigate airline hiring boards and secure professional pilot placement.
