Classes run as three-day weekend preparation courses designed to cover the complete curriculum required for FAA written knowledge exams. Students receive the proprietary American Flyers Training Manual on-site at the start of the course. Instructors walk through complex aviation theory, regulations, and flight planning concepts in a structured group environment, ensuring material is understood before test day.
The ground school schedule includes dedicated preparation courses for the Private Pilot Written, Instrument Written, and Commercial Written. The facility also hosts monthly Flight Instructor Renewal Courses (FIRC) for active CFIs seeking certificate revalidation. Each curriculum focuses on the specific aeronautical knowledge areas required by the FAA for that rating level.
Classes are scheduled monthly across training locations nationwide. American Flyers maintains a strict policy never to cancel a scheduled ground school class due to low enrollment. If a single student registers for a scheduled weekend course, the school conducts the class as planned, guaranteeing that pilots can maintain their personal training timelines.
Class sizes are kept small enough to allow instructors to provide individual attention and answer specific questions. At the same time, cohorts are large enough to foster pilot camaraderie and peer discussion. This balance allows students to study complex topics together while receiving direct guidance from experienced ground instructors.
On-site computerized testing centers allow students to complete their official FAA written knowledge exam on Sunday afternoon immediately following the conclusion of the weekend instruction. Scheduling testing directly after class ensures that material remains fresh in the student’s mind. Testing availability depends on FAA system operations, so students are encouraged to reserve their test slots ahead of time.
Students receive their primary training manual on-site when the course begins. Depending on the specific written exam, students need to bring a laptop or tablet to access electronic course materials, study guides, and practice exam software. Students also need standard flight planning tools, including an E6B navigation computer (electronic or manual), an aviation plotter, and a standard calculator. Instructors guide students on how to use these physical and digital tools during performance and flight planning calculations throughout the weekend.
